cherry on the top ?
is it a special evening ?
how about a bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champagne….or for that very special evening how about a bottle of Cristal ! We can also arrange rose petals, complimentary festive dessert plate, home made cake, a maybe a poorly (but enthusiastically) sung version of Happy Birthday in Arabic.
gastro mk - it's not just a meal !
We offer much more than just a meal. Arrive before dinner & choose your table, enjoy a little welcome shot, and head up to the beautiful roof terrace. Choose a cocktail (watch the stairs on the way down – these cocktails contain ‘enthusiastic’ quantities of alcohol !), and enjoy our olive selection. Continue with homemade canapés, choose your food, and head down to the dining rooms & patio for your meal. 5 courses later you can pay the bill and leave. OR…. you can come up top the roof and have a digestif, or a cigar from our top end selection of Cuban delights, or a sheesha. For a really special end to the evening, watch out for an email the day before your dinner telling you about how you can stay the night at maison mk for a super cheap price (one night only, subject to availability, blah, blah, blah – but it’s a proper bargain !)
our favourite places to eat and drink in Marrakech
gastro mk – we love this place – 5 course tasting menu – French / Moroccan fusion • bistro mk – lunchtime fresh grilled foods

LUNCHES…. these have been our long time favourites

…In Gueliz

Kechmara, does great French steak frites, salads, fruit tartes, etc, etc. A real buzzy place very popular with

the expats & the in-crowd of Marrakech.

Café de la Poste does a similar light lunch menu, also good for breakfasts out.

…In the Medina

Naranj, 15 mn walk in the médina – contemporary Lebanese food in a modern clean designed restaurant.

Terasse des epices, 15 mn walk in the médina with a great terrace and nice simple moroccan food. Also

some great shopping nearby !

Un dejeuner a Marrakech deep in the Medina run by the lovely Fatima.

• For the more adventurous, Mechoui alley (very rustic, very local, very few Europeans ever seen in here!). It is fabulous roasted whole lamb, chops, mint tea, etc – well worth avisit and a real slice of proper local Moroccan life. Don’t leave it too late, all the lamb is gone by 2pm !

DINNER …the choice is endless but these are popular with maison mk guests.

…Moroccan fine dining

Le Tobsil , in our neighbourhood, just round the corner – a set menu feast in a traditional riad with musicians

– be hungry!

Le Tanjia, in the Jewish Quarter – nice décor & good tajines.

Al Fassia –in the heart of Gueliz – a bastion of Moroccan traditional cuisine by an all women team. They also

have a second restaurant in the outskirts of town.

Le Foundouk – down a little alleyway deep in the very ‘old’ area of the north east of the medina…so a taxi is

definitely recommended! Good looking, with a decent menu split into Moroccan & international dishes.

La Trattoria (great Italian food in a lovely courtyard setting).

…International food

Bo-Zin – out of town by 3 miles, but a stunning cool, dark, chic restaurant with gardens containing a flaming firepit, etc.

Djellabar (Owned & run by Claude Challe – the man behind the Buddha Bar empire.)

Le Studio (a very French bistro)

la Salama, in the medina, also good for happy hour cocktails too

Le Comptoir Darna – our firm favourite for a fun night out – always busy & a great atmosphere. Don’t book too early to eat as the entertainment with belly dancers starts anywhere from 9.30 to 10.30, upstairs see the Marrakchi in-crowd later gather later on.

Jad Mahal  – a good alternative to Le Comptoir Darna, in a similar style

bar mk – perhaps we are showing favouritism, but we have 2 great barmen preparing cocktails & all other drinks every evening (except Wednesdays – they get to rest their cocktail shaking muscles on a Wednesday) • kozy bar – great for sundowner drinks. In the mellah area & you can watch the storks settling down for the evening. • le comptoir – top floor bar (can also do dinner here)

Generally, it is safe to assume that most restaurants, cafes, and bars in the Medina (old town) do not serve alcohol, and those in Gueliz (new town) do serve alcohol. We are very fortunate to be one of the very few riads in the medina to have a full Alcohol Licence. To put it into perspective, if a riad serves alcohol without a licence and the police find out and raid them, they are not only taking the risk of being closed down immediately and the owner/manager thrown in jail, but the guests staying are also immediately thrown out!

In the Medina, at night time :

Café Arabe, only 5 minutes walk from maison mk and with a nice roof terrace for sun-down.

La Mamounia – the grand old lady of Marrakech (a little like the feel of the Savoy in London). Now reopened & very luxurious & opulent. Also very expensive, but worth visiting for a wander around and a drink at one of the 3 bars there.

In Gueliz most restaurants will serve alcohol.

Café de la Poste does nice early evening drinks on the terrace outside, or up on the top floor.

Bab Hotel also has a good roof terrace and attracts a young hip crowd.

Club Lotus, a cool bar (& restaurant), close to Le Comptoir restaurant.

Djellabar, by Claude Challe, in the same area of town.

Late night

So, a club that is part of the Sofitel Hotel

Teatro next door to the Sofitel Hotel is an old favourite

Finally, don’t forget…….Moroccan Whiskey – a little local Moroccan joke name for mint tea. Most people find it far too sweet when they first try it. By the end of the Marrakech visit, they become converts – do give it a go.
